After finding Melissa on Instagram, I knew it was time to take to take the love for my skin to the next level. “Turn On Post Notifications” happened quicker than adding to my Sephora cart. AND she is in Washington?! Lawd YES. Between her expertise, point of view & stellar beauty, my iPhone notes were filling up fast with regimens I didn’t want to introduce to my bank account quite yet!

Fast forward a few months. My appointment in Spokane FINALLY came! Explaining my concerns, she took the time to examine my skin, tell me products that would eliminate & control my cystic acne outbreaks, & why Micro-needling would be the best investment. Then came the “product must-have list.” The Hallelujah moment.

I was able to experience in true fashion how Melissa adapted the name “The Beauty Nurse.” How she presents her self, her passion for industry, & putting the needs of her patients as priority. It felt like I was just chatting it up with one of my girlfriends over a glass of wine! Which made swiping my card at the end for new product worth every penny.

❏ TELL US ALL ABOUT YOUR CHILDHOOD, YOUR FAMILY & HOW YOU GOT STARTED IN YOUR CAREER?

I grew up in a small town in Montana surrounded by majestic mountains. I was a farm girl at heart. I slept with my goats and would sneak out in the middle of the night to walk the quarter mile to the barn and check on the wild kittens. Before Nintendo was a thing, I was always outside. I have three younger sisters, so felt a certain responsibility to care for them as older sisters tend to do. That nurturing tendency has stayed with me since I was young. I love to care and give to others and feel blessed to have the opportunity to do so in my career. Even though my parents divorced in high school, they never were on different pages in how to raise us. They supported us 100% in our dreams and were there to catch us if we fell. With their support, I finished nursing school, worked in a plastic surgeon's office, started as an Allergan trainer and manifested the vision I have had for years, which is to make women feel beautiful.

❏ WAS THE END GAME ALWAYS BEING A COSMETIC NURSE INJECTOR?

No! I didn’t know where I would end up when I started nursing school. My family is all about hard work, so that was my foundation. I needed to make money to pay for my first apartment, which meant I needed a job. I landed a job at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane, WA and worked my ass off. Those years were hectic, but I wouldn’t take them back for the world. They made me who I am today—appreciative and completely in love with what I do. I didn’t start to get into cosmetics until I worked at a plastic surgeon’s office. I was naive when I started! I am cringing as I think back to those days when I still tanned and had no idea what a skincare routine was. Eventually, I moved onwards to do more aesthetic injections because I saw the effects aesthetic treatments had on each person who walked into the office. They left feeling beautiful. I wanted to be a part of that process, because I think we all deserve to feel beautiful.

❏ GIVE US THE DEETS ON HOW YOU & YOUR HUBBY MET!

I met my husband through my younger sister, Katie. My sister is gregarious. She takes it upon herself to be a matchmaker to everyone she meets and to be honest...she is good at it. When I met Ryan in our college cafeteria all I could think was, “Wow! He is hot.” Obviously my sister has match making skills, because I have been happily married to my hot husband for 10 years! He is so supportive in all my endeavors and I truly treasure that. He has been with me every step of the way, a true teammate.

❏ HOW DID YOU PREP YOUR SKIN FOR YOUR WEDDING DAY? WOULD YOU HAVE CHANGED ANYTHING IF TIME TRAVEL WAS AN OPTION?

To be honest I got married when I was 27 and I was still using a tanning bed at that time. I had zero skincare regimen. It wasn’t until a year later where I got into aesthetics and learned about the damage I was doing to my skin. If I could do it over again I would of started on a basic skincare regimen. Wash, Exfoliate, Tone, Antioxidant, Retinol and SPF. Simple and Basic. We didn’t have things like the Hydrafacial back then and that is one treatment I recommend for all my brides to prep their skin for their big day.

10 Year Glow Up

The #glowup is real! The first picture was today - January 12, 2019 and the second picture was 10 years ago on my honeymoon. First off, I was a chronic tanner which destroyed the skin on my entire body permanently. I refused to get Botox and fillers on myself although I was just starting to inject it in other people. I had zero diet restrictions and ate whatever I wanted and it would of NEVER consisted of juicing or greens. I HATED the gym. You couldn’t get me to step foot in the gym. Now coming up on 36 in a few months I feel better than I have ever felt in my life as far as my health goes and I feel like I don’t look like I am an orange, leathered, wrinkly human anymore! I love eating clean, I love the gym, I love Botox and fillers, I love skincare, I love being healthy!

❏LET'S CREATE THE PERFECT BEAUTY TIMELINE FOR BRIDES STARTING A YEAR OUT TO DAYS PRIOR. WHAT WOULD TREATMENTS & REGIMENS WOULD YOU SUGGEST TO REVAMP THEIR ROUTINE?

This is a great question. Generally, if brides want Botox then they need to come see me 4-6 months prior to their wedding and then again one month prior to the wedding date. This allows for a follow-up appointment two weeks after injection to see if you need any adjustments. Botox is a fantastic treatment for the forehead lines. There is nothing worse than seeing your makeup settle into those pesky forehead lines. If a bride wants fillers, they need to see me 6 months prior to their big day. Sometimes adding a little filler under the eyes to help dark under eye circles works wonders. Some brides like a mini cheek pop with filler so it helps the contouring process look effortless. And of course who wants dry lips on their wedding day or their lipstick bleeding into their lip lines. For this I would recommend Juvederm or Restylane filler in the lips to help replump naturally and hydrate the lip. Just because we are using Botox and Fillers doesn’t mean we have to look like a different person. I don’t think our finances would appreciate feeling like they were marrying someone else! Treatments and skin care products only can enhance your skin more. I have many tips and tricks for you beauties! Check out the Wedding Day Prep Blog on my website for more info.

I love Hydrafacials and always recommend a series of them for my brides. If you’re dealing with acne this is a great treatment to get it under control. I would be sure to get on a good skincare regimen 6 months prior to your big day. Wash, Exfoliate, Tone, Antioxidant, SPF, Retinol. ZO Skin Health and Skin Better Science are my two favorite skincare brands to put your skin through bootcamp.

❏ A SKIN CARE MYTH YOU HEAR ALMOST DAILY & WOULD LIKE TO ADDRESS IT:

The biggest beauty myth I hear is that you need moisturizer. If your skin is on point and you are using the right product, you actually don’t even need moisturizer. Check out my blog called The Myth of Moisturizer on my website to learn more. The other myth I always have to address is that you don’t need sunscreen if the sun isn’t out. You ALWAYS need sunscreen, even if there are clouds.

❏ PRODUCTS A BRIDE SHOULD ignore as they walk through A SEPHORA OR ULTA SPLURGE?:

Foundation! Just don’t even go there. I inform my beauties to treat their skin with good skin care so they don’t have to hide behind layers of makeup. Foundation also makes our pores larger and no one wants that!

Pick it up, like, yesterday? I go straight to the green beauty section. I love all their green beauty skincare products. Herbivore is my favorite! I most likely won’t leave Ulta without the Tarte Shape Tape Concealer, Tan Towels (they give the perfect bronze skin), and three new lip colors. What can I say? I like variety.

❏ MY SKIN HAS DRAMATICALLY CHANGED SINCE OUR APPOINTMENT & PICKING UP YOUR RECOMMENDED PRODUCTS. GIVE US YOUR TOP GAME CHANGING PRODUCTS (FOR OILY & DRY SKIN) FOR A BRIDE:

Awww I am so glad to hear this! If you’ve been following me on social media for awhile or have seen me in-clinic you know how much I love ZO Skin Health products. I also do believe in mixing the medical skincare products with organic/natural skincare products too.

For Oily Skin: ZO Exfoliating Cleanser, Exfoliating Polish, Oil Control Pads, Daily Power Defense and their SPF + Prime. I would also add the One Love Organics Love + Charcoal Mask and use that 3 nights a week for 20 minutes.

For Dry Skin: ZO Gentle Cleanser, Exfoliating Polish, Complexion Renewal Pads, Daily Power Defense, Anfisa Lilou Regenerating Balm and the One Love Organics Love + Charcoal Mask to use 3 nights a week for 20 minutes.

❏ WHAT IS A PRODUCT THAT'S DESERVES MORE HYPE FOR A BRIDE TO INVEST IN?

Of course a good skincare regimen! You want your skin glowing for your big day! And in order to have this you must follow a good skincare regimen. See above questions for the products I recommend. But I would say Retinol is one products that deserves more hype. It’s still to this day the only thing we can apply topically that reverses the signs of aging. It helps shrink pores, helps acne, helps fine lines/wrinkles and helps cell turnover leaving your skin smooth as a babies bottom!

❏ NATURAL DEWY SKIN. EVERY BRIDE'S #SKINGOALS. TOP THREE WAYS TO ACHIEVE IT?

  1. Hydrate!

  2. Exercise - get your body moving!

  3. Start getting Hydrafacials every 4 weeks prior to your wedding.

❏ IN EXCITING NEWS, YOU JUST ANNOUNCED THAT YOU & YOUR SISTER KATIE ARE OPENING YOUR OWN BUSINESS CRAFTED BY THE BEAUTY NURSE IN MISSOULA, MONTANA! DESCRIBE HOW YOU WANT TO CHANGE THE INDUSTRY WITH THIS NEW JOURNEY?

The only industry I want to change is how the world views beauty. There are a lot of people against aesthetics and buying expensive skincare products, and I completely understand the reasoning. What some fail to understand is that it’s not about the aesthetics to me. My career is about unearthing and helping women craft a version of themselves they deem beautiful. That is not to say that they are not already beautiful. I believe they are! But they may believe they are not, and I feel a responsibility to help them get to the point where they feel they are beautiful, even if that means adding a toner to their skincare routine or getting some Botox sprinkles.

❏ IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WISH YOU WOULD HAVE KNOWN WHEN YOU STARTED OUT?

The biggest lesson for me was and still is learning how to say “No” and set boundaries. I am a major people pleaser in the sense that I want everyone around me to be happy. Compassion and sensitivity are a bit of a double edge sword I think. I love that I care, but sometimes caring so much means that what others tell me affects me deeply. That is the advice I wish I had from the beginning—don’t let what people say shift your mood or your integrity.

❏ LEAVE OUR BRIDES WITH ONE PEICE OF IMPORTANT ADVICE THEY SHOULD NEVER IGNORE.

Never lay in a tanning bed and wear sunscreen! Simple as that.
